Valley soil is a different medium
North Valley ground holds far more moisture and organic matter than the mesa, which widens what will grow and changes how it should be watered. We check how a lot actually drains before designing, and take advantage of the difference.
That means a Los Ranchos plan can combine shaded understory planting with water-wise high-desert landscaping in the open, sunny parts of the property.
Old trees, properly maintained
Cottonwoods, elms, and old fruit trees define these lots. Structural tree trimming keeps them safe over drives, sheds, and fence lines, with deadwood cleared before the summer storms arrive.
Two irrigation systems, one plan
Where ditch water still runs, we keep trees and open ground on it and put beds and new plantings on zoned drip irrigation. Deep infrequent water for established trees, shorter cycles for anything trying to establish, and no overlap between them.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to remove old trees to update the yard?
Rarely. Mature valley trees are the most valuable feature on most Los Ranchos lots. We design around the canopy and protect the root zone during construction.
Can I keep flood irrigation and still add drip?
Yes. The two coexist well when they are zoned deliberately, with ditch water on trees and pasture and drip on ornamental beds.
Does North Valley soil need amending?
Less than mesa soil usually does. We test drainage first and amend only where a specific planting calls for it.
